Accommodation & Facilities
Sanctuary Swala has been built to the highest eco-friendly standards and offers 12 luxurious open-plan and spacious canvas tents; all shaded by acacia trees and within site of the waterhole frequented by elephants and big cats. Each tent has an ensuite bathroom with indoor and outdoor shower and features a spacious open plan arrangement with comfortable king or twin beds and relaxing chairs.
A hair dryer, ceiling fan, in room safe, mosquito nets and private deck are available in all tents. Each tent has a personal attendant to attend to guests’ every need. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available in all guest tents.
The main dining area, deck and library are lifted on stilts and surrounded by ancient baobab trees and the wooden
decked boma boasts a canopy of stars. The camp also features a bush boutique. Electricity supply is a combination of silent packed generator and small solar panel set up.
Sanctuary Swala is located in a secluded area of Tarangire National Park.Kuro Airstrip is approximately a 45 minute drive from Sanctuary Swala
Flying times:
- Arusha (ARK) to Kuro Airstrip – 25 minutes
- Kuro airstrip to Serengeti South (SGS) airstrip – 1 hour 30 minutes
Road transfers:
- Arusha to Sanctuary Swala – 4 hours
- Kilimanjaro to Sanctuary Swala – 5 hours
- Sanctuary Swala to Ngorongoro Crater – 5 hours

The luggage restriction for light aircrafts is 15kg / 33lbs per person in a soft-sided bag
Breakfast, lunch, snacks during activities and dinners are all included in your stay. Breakfast is served before the morning game activity. No coffee, cakes etc on morning activity – unless guests are taking a picnic breakfast. Lunch can be enjoyed back at the camp or as a picnic in the bush. Afternoon game viewing includes classic sundowner drinks and snacks at specially selected spots before returning to the camp for pre-dinner drinks and dinner. Romantic private dinners can be arranged upon request. With prior notice, our camps are able to arrange halaal meals, however, please note our kitchens aren’t strictly halaal and our chefs are not trained in halaal food preparation. Unfortunately, we are unable to arrange kosher meals.
Meals typically consist of the following:
- Breakfast: Continental and full English Breakfast
- Lunch: Table d’Hote, 3 course meal with 2 choices, one being a vegetarian
- Dinner: Table d’Hote, 3 course meal with 2 to 3 choices, one being a vegetarian
Guests celebrating their honeymoon will receive special surprises during their stay. All attempts are made to keep honeymooners separate from other guests.
Our honeymoon services include:
- Honeymoon welcome card in tent
- Special honeymoon cocktail during sundowners
- Sparkling wine in guests’ tent on night before departure
Children are welcome ,6 years and older Sanctuary Swala.
Children aged 15 years and younger are required to share with their parents. Two triples are available on request.
Children aged 15 or younger are not permitted on walking safaris
Activities
The Tarangire National Park is famous for its large herds of elephants that congregate under the spectacular baobab trees. The park attracts an abundance of zebra and is home to waterbuck, giraffe and kudu with their immense spiral horns as well as oryx with their lengthy rapier horns. The park is also home to over 550 species of bird with yellow-collared lovebirds a common sight in the trees along the Tarangire River. Key wildlife include: lion, leopard,elephant, buffalo, cheetah, giraffe, zebra, brown and spotted hyena, kudu, wildebeest, waterbuck, eland, wild dog,fringe eared Oryx.
The following activities are included in your stay:
Game Drives: Tarangire is famed for its large concentrations of elephant. The river is the park’s lifeline and attracts much of the game to its banks. You may also find some of the many leopards that rest by day in the shady trees. The low volume of visitors to the park offers a truly unique and private experience and our customised open safari vehicles offer unobstructed viewing and great photography opportunities.
Bush breakfasts, picnics and dinners: Plan with your guide to take a picnic breakfast or lunch with you, or enjoy a bush dinner where a secluded clearing is prepared for a traditional East African meal. With a sundowner in hand, watch as the sun swiftly sinks and you’re setting becomes illuminated by a magnificent log fire. Once you have settled into your surroundings let our chef introduce you to traditional Swahili fare and experience a memorable evening under the African night sky
Canoe Safari
Experience the beauty of Tanzania from a unique perspective on a canoe safari on Lake Gursi. Just a short walk or drive from Sanctuary Swala, guests will participate in a safety and skills briefing before departing the lake shore in 2-man Canadian canoes for their 2-3 hour water based adventure. Paddling through the water is a magical experience, seeing elephants swimming and game drinking at the shore from your canoe shows the natural world from a totally different
angle. A highly-trained canoeing guide will be present. (Seasonal activity. Please contact for availability)
Hot Air Balloon Safari
Your balloon is inflated against the first rays of sunshine and once aloft floats gently over the Tarangire National Park.
Gaze down upon towering baobab trees and spot leopards and herds of elephants from the sky. The balloon flight
time is around one hour, with breakfast including bacon, sausages, eggs and pastries awaiting you upon landing.
Walking Safaris
Put on your walking shoes and experience beautiful Tarangire National Park from a different perspective with a walking safari. With our professional walking guide and armed ranger, guests can now explore the grassland around camp in one of the most secluded areas of the park. Our qualified guide has a wealth of knowledge and will explain how to understand animal behaviour while tracking a variety of game. (Seasonal activity. Please contact for availability)
Night game drives
Experience the wonders of a safari at night in Tarangire. As dusk falls, relax in the comfort of Sanctuary Swala’s customised safari vehicle as you venture into the park transformed by night. Search for nocturnal animals rarely seen as this is one of the few places in northern Tanzania where you can enjoy a safari by moonlight. At night, you may encounter an African wild cat, the elusive leopard or feel the round eyes of a bush baby. With specialised lighting, you will be able to look for lion and hyena, as well as smaller creatures such as spotted genet, serval, bat eared foxes, owls and nightjars. (Maximum 5 people.)
Additional activities are at an additional cost and can be pre-booked or while guests are in camp.
